A Cake Case Study

I love to play around with ideas in my sketchbook. In this Flash movie, you can see some of the ideas that I presented to my client, The Cake Shoppe. The process we followed is standard. They told me what kind of image they wanted to project. I developed a number of sketches and presented them, in this case by email. They chose one of the designs and I refined it to their complete satisfaction. Can you guess which one they chose?

Where Do the Ideas Come From?

Many people come to me and they say, "Hey, where do you come up with ideas for your work? Do you raise chickens that lay light-bulbs instead of eggs?" No. The answer is more strange and exotic. Some of the solutions to my creative problems come to me right away, others come in dreams. That is a special treat. I am the type that will think about a project on my feet, while brushing my teeth or exercising.

To my great consternation, I often catch myself thinking about work while trying to meditate or hold an unrelated conversation. The great majority of ideas come from my hands-on time with a project, however. Working with the stuff of the project, turning it over and around seems to generate the best ideas from me. And so the process of work leads to the ideas most of the time and not the other way around.

Another Case Study

I plan to include another case study in the web design section, regarding images and photo editing and sharks!!!
